Strange Facts

Obviously I read a lot of weird articles. Today I found a pretty interesting one and now I am bursting with strange facts that I don't want to forget. So here, now I am sharing them with you!


A mother's sun exposure during her pregnancy may influence her baby's height and bone strength? Researchers at Bristol University in Britain found that babies born in late summer and early fall are taller and have wider bones than those born in winter and spring. They said the reason may lie in their mothers' sun exposure in late pregnancy. The sun boosts Vitamin D levels, fostering bone growth.

Fliers are more susceptible to developing blood clots when they sit in window seats? A study in the Netherlands found that the risk of deep vein thrombosis, a potentially deadly condition, was twice as high for people in window seats, as opposed to middle and aisle seats.

Alcohol in mouthwash has been linked to cancer? An Australian study suggested that such mouthwashes make it easier for cancer-causing substances to enter the lining of the mouth, according the a report in Australia's Daily Telegraph.

A male gene may control the gender of his offspring? A British doctoral student researched the histories of nearly 1,000 American and European families dating to 1600, The New York Times reported. Corry Gellatly concluded there's a gene that determines whether a man will father more sons, more daughters, or equal numbers of each.

Just seeing someone smoke can trigger smokers to ditch efforts to quit? Brain scans taken during normal smoking activity and 24 hours after quitting illustrate a surge in a certain kind of brain activity when quitters see photos of people smoking, LiveSciene reported. The activity occurs in the dorsal striatum, which controls automatic responses, suggesting that quitting smoking may be out of a person's conscious control.

Texting while driving is riskier than driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs? A U.K. research company found the average reaction time deteriorated by 35 percent when 17- to 24-year-olds drove in a simulator while writing or reading texts. Previous studies showed those who drank alcohol at the legal limit were 12 percent slower and those who had used marijuana were 21 percent slower.

Bathing might make you less judgmental? A study at England's University of Plymouth found that people who felt physically clean themselves were more likely to cut others some slack.

Your birth month could affect your chances of getting childhood asthma? Babies born four months before the peak of cold and flu season -- typically between December and February -- have a higher risk of developing childhood asthma than other babies, Vanderbilt University Medical Center researchers found.

Left-handed people are more prone to shyness and anxiety than right-handers? A behavioral study at Abertay University in Dundee, Scotland, found left-handers to be more inhibited, especially when it came to new or unusual situations.

How a fan could keep your baby alive? In a study of 500 babies, using a fan to circulate air in the room as the children slept seemed to lower the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.
